Circumcision

Many men are unaware of what circumcision actually is, or why the foreskin is surgically removed. In reality, circumcision is a medical procedure performed primarily for hygiene and men’s health.

There is evidence suggesting that circumcision:
• Reduces the accumulation of bacteria beneath the foreskin
• Lowers the risk of certain infections
• Improves genital hygiene and makes daily cleaning easier

What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. Once the foreskin is removed, the penis becomes easier to clean and maintain.
Traditionally, circumcision was performed for religious or cultural reasons, such as in Islamic practices where it is required. Today, many parents also choose circumcision for medical and hygiene benefits, such as reducing the risk of infection, eliminating odors, and preventing buildup of smegma or bacteria.

Circumcision can be performed on infants, children, adults, and even the elderly.

What Is the Foreskin?

The foreskin (prepuce) is a fold of skin that covers the tip of the penis. It is a normal anatomical structure.
Some people can retract it normally, while others may experience tightness or incomplete retraction. In such cases, it’s important to assess severity and underlying causes.

What Is Phimosis (Tight Foreskin)?

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is difficult or impossible to retract. This may cause pain, irritation, or make hygiene difficult.
In some cases it is mild, but in others it may lead to recurrent inflammation or small tears.

Treatment Approach

  • Clinical evaluation to identify severity, inflammation status, and contributing factors

  • Personalized care plan to reduce irritation and address the cause

  • Procedures or surgery may be considered in selected cases when medically indicated and appropriate

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seek medical care if you have:

  • Severe pain, inability to retract, or repeated tearing

  • Recurrent inflammation, increasing redness/heat/swelling, pus, or fever

  • Significant difficulty with hygiene affecting quality of life or confidence
